Irish Music & the Dangers of Courting Irish Women...

A few months back I posted a short piece highlighting the theme of immigration often seen in Traditional Irish Music. Having noticed another very interesting theme recently I thought I'd do a follow up piece.

Basically, several traditional Irish songs share some valuable insight into  Irish women and perhaps the dangers of falling for these wily and calculating beauties.  Before I write anything that could get me in trouble, maybe its best if I just share my top 5 examples and you can form you're own opinion. I dare not dig any bigger a hole for myself ;-)

Please have a look at my examples below....

5: Seven Drunken Nights

This humorous song, often sung by the great Dubliners, tells the story of a drunkard who would arrive home every night after spending a little too long in his local tavern, only to find many clues of his wife's infidelity.  Knowing her husband had taken a few too many beers she flagrantly doesn't try to cover up the evidence of her affair but instead makes wild unbelievable excuses. In fairness, given the mess that arrives home to her each night perhaps this guy is doing well that shes only having an affair and hasn't up and left him yet. Maybe we can let this Irish Lady off the hook..ha.

4: The Ballad of Little Musgrave

This ballad tells the tale of two ill-fated lovers, Little Musgrave and Lady Bernard. Little Musgrave is a lowly servant or worker for the local nobleman Lord Bernard.  Having caught the eye of the Lords's wife she invites Musgrave to spend the night while her husband is away. Little Musgrave duly obliges, however another servant nearby hears their discussion and quickly runs to Lord Bernard revealing this indiscretion. In the below cover by Christy Moore, you can hear around the 3:30 minute mark how Little Musgrave felt something was awry the next morning as he lay in bed with Lady Bernard. He suspected that his lord was returning and wanted to make a swift exit...perhaps out a side window (although this isnt mentioned in the song..ha). However, Lady Bernard convinced him to stay by saying the following...

"Lie still, Lie still my Little Musgrave and hug me from the cold.....and you a women in you're arms why would ya go away?!"

Every time I hear this line I always wonder why on earth she didn't let Little Musgrave flee. Instead of taking the prudent course of action and encouraging Musgrave to jump out the bedroom window, enabling them to continue their affair another time, she persuades him to stay which leads to a dangerous confrontation with Lord Bernard, who catches them in the act. In gentlemanly fashion Lord Bernard dispatches of Little Musgrave in a fair sword fight only to then murder his wife in a fit of rage as she declares that she'd "more want his (Little Musgraves) dead body then all your (lord Bernard's) kit and kin". Perhaps this was just an unfortunate tale of two star-crossed lovers...but a little part of me wonders, was there other elements at play here not covered in the song? Perhaps, the Lady and Lord had been having some serious marital issues that made the Lady seek to punish her husband by taking another man into her bed, hoping he'd catch her in the act. In which case, poor Little Musgrave was just the unfortunate bloke she choose to get back at her husband ;-)

Lie still, Lie still my Little Musgrave and hug me from the cold.....and you a women in you're arms why would ya go away?!(寝ていなさいよ、私のMusgrave。

それは、「more want his (Little Musgraves) dead body then all your (lord Bernard's) kit and kin(あなたの親族すべてよりもMusgraveの死体のほうを選ぶわ)」という言葉でした。 。。

3: Whiskey In The Jar

I guess it's fair enough to say here that the lad in this song was a bit of a scoundrel and perhaps deserved what he got. After all, he did draw his pistol and sword on the unsuspecting Captain Farrell for the sole purpose of stealing his money. He then takes this loot home to his wife or girlfriend Jenny whose eyes must have lit up with delight as she quickly concocts a plan to relieve him of his new riches. She must have been quite the fox  because I've a feeling this guy didn't much trust Jenny anyway, why else would he get her to swear not to deceive him. Anyway, he was a fool to take her word. No sooner was he asleep then she stole his money, sword, put water in his gun powder and ran off to reveal his location to Captain Farrell. No bother to Jenny...

2: Courtin In The Kitchen

As we get closer to No. 1 we start to see a different breed of Irish Women. Here in the song 'Courtin In The Kitchen' we see how a young 17 year old lad is seduced and subsequently betrayed by the beauty Miss Henrietta Bell. Henrietta was working in the kitchen of of another nobleman Captain Kelly and after a chance encounter she invited this young man to the Kitchen for a bit of a party while the Captain was away fishing. Delighted with himself this lad puts on his best cloths, oils his hair and makes his way to Captain Kelly's house. It's not long before he finds himself under the Kitchen Stairs with Miss Bell who seems to be a bit carried away with herself, its only the first date and shes talking about marriage...perhaps alarm bells should have been ringing in this lad's head telling him Henrietta could be a bit of a nut job.

"With her arm around me waist, she slyly hinted marriage".

Anyway, it wouldn't be a good Irish Song if Captain Kelly didn't arrive home early to catch them in the act. With the possibility that Henrietta might get in trouble for having a man in the house she quickly starts telling lies to Captain Kelly, explaining how this man broke into the house...(and presumably had his way with her).

"Her eyes were full of hate and poison she was spittin'
When the Captain at the door, walked right into the kitchen"

Unfortunately, there was nothing this young lad could do and at the tender age of 17 he got sentenced to 6 months in jail. Nasty. If your reading this and dating an Irish Girl called Henrietta....good luck with that...

Her eyes were full of hate and poison she was spittin' When the Captain at the door, walked right into the kitchen(大佐がドアに立ち、台所に入ってきたとき、彼女の目は憎悪と毒に満ちていました)」 かわいそうに、17歳という若さではどうすることもできず、彼は6ヶ月間刑務所に入れられることになってしまうのです。

1: Black Velvet Band

And here we have it, No. 1 has to be this crafty Belfast B!^ch whose beauty and deciet lead to an innocent young man getting sentenced to 7 years hard labor on the opposite side of the planet in Tasmania. Ouch! Walking down Broadway this lad is captivated by the beauty of this fair skin, diamond eyed Lady whose hair is tied up with a Black Velvet Band.  Delighted with the opportunity to walk and talk to this girl he stays a little longer than expected. As another Gentleman passes by this cunning beauty had the slight of hand to pick his pockets clean.

A gold watch she took from his pocket
And placed it right into my hand
And the very next thing that I knew was
I'd landed in Van Diemen's Land

However, the big mistake this fella makes, is not chasing after the gentleman to return his watch. Instead I assume he acted the big lad and took the watch home only to be picked up by the police the next day.

But before the Judge and the Jury
Next morning I had to appear
And the judge he says to me
"Young man, your case it is proven and clear

I'll give you seven years penal servitude
To be spent far away from the land
Far away from your friends and companions"
Betrayed by the black velvet band
